Overlanding

Overlanding is a type of adventure travel where in many ways the journey is just as important as the destination. Typically, overland tours are longer journeys undertaken in large, off-road vehicles with passengers sleeping in tented camps as they travel.

Commercial overland adventure tours took off in the late 1960s. At that time, tour companies began offering overland tours to small groups in large, specially equipped trucks. These journeys could, and still do in some cases, take months to complete and rely on the cooperation of their paying passengers for meal preparation, purchasing of produce at local markets and the setting up and breaking of camp.

The original, classic overlanding adventure tour is the complete journey from Europe to Cape Town in South Africa or vice versa. These days, overlanding adventure tours are offered on all the continents with the exception of Antarctica.
